Session Description: Creating grant proposals that stand out requires more than a rigorous literature review of a topic. Instead, grant writers must build a compelling narrative that incorporates the impact of an educational activity on both the learners who attend and the patients they serve.
In order to effectively communicate these holistic aspects of continuing healthcare education, grant writers must incorporate elements of storytelling into their process. Incorporating the viewpoints of learners and patients to create an engaging story arc that unifies all elements of a grant proposal produces a more robust and cohesive final product that allows readers to envision the full scope and impact of a proposed educational activity.
This session will enlighten attendees on the principles of storytelling and how they can be applied to grant writing to create a more comprehensive proposal that highlights the perspectives of clinicians and patients. By shifting the narrative to this human-centered approach, attendees will ultimately be able to craft grant proposals that better meet the needs of those they are meant to serve.
In keeping with the theme of expanding perspectives and inspiring possibilities, this session will encourage participants to approach their grant writing from a new point of view that focuses on the people involved as much as the scientific material at hand. This new paradigm will inspire attendees to rethink their status quo approach to grant writing and take future proposals to the next level with improved clarity and flow.
In addition, this session will serve as a follow-up to a proposed AIS 2024 session entitled Leveraging AI for Grant Writing 101: Strategies for Efficient, Effective & Ethical Use. Although learners need not have attended the AIS session to participate in this proposed session, those who attend both will be equipped with even more new skills for using AI to accomplish their grant writing objectives. This session will review available AI tools that can be leveraged to develop story arcs that engage readers by creating a compelling narrative.
Following this session, learners will be able to develop grant proposals that focus on the perspective of clinicians and patients and the potential impact of proposed educational activities on these key players. By creating a storyline that includes the target audience and beneficiaries of continuing education as the main characters, attendees will generate more dynamic proposals that highlight the “who” in addition to the “what”, “when”, and “where”.
